How to Charge and Store an Underwater Camera So It Lasts 3+ Seasons

You pulled the camera out in April, full of plans for the season. First charge takes 3.5 hours like it always did. But the battery indicator reads full after 45 minutes and drains to empty in under an hour on the water. The camera isn't broken. The battery is just tired.

Most lithium-ion batteries in consumer electronics have a useful life of 300-500 full charge cycles before capacity starts falling noticeably. The rate of that decline is almost entirely about how you treat the battery — not the brand, not the model, not luck. Two identical cameras, one cared for and one left on a dock year-round, will look completely different after two seasons.

This post is the practical version. How to charge, how to store, what not to do, and how to squeeze three or more seasons out of the battery in your CanFish CamX.

Quick Primer: What Wears a Lithium Battery Out

You don't need the chemistry. You need the shortlist.

Four things age a lithium battery faster than normal use:

  • Sitting at 100% for long periods. A fully charged battery is under stress. Keeping it there for weeks causes measurable capacity loss.
  • Sitting at 0% for long periods. A fully drained battery can enter a protective lockout state and sometimes won't wake up.
  • Heat. Any temperature above 35°C (95°F) during charging or storage accelerates aging. Hot cars, sunny windowsills, sealed tackle boxes in summer.
  • Cold. Using the battery below 0°C (32°F) doesn't permanently damage it, but it drops performance instantly. Charging it below freezing can permanently reduce capacity.

Everything else — fast charging, slow charging, wireless versus wired — matters less than people think. What matters is the four items above.

Charging: The Routine That Works

The camera ships with a wireless charging dock and a USB-C cable. Both are fine. Wireless charging generates a little more heat than wired, but on a low-power device like this it's a marginal difference.

The charge routine in five steps

  1. Charge the night before you fish. Not three days before. The less time the battery spends sitting at 100%, the better.
  2. Don't chase full charge for a short trip. If you're going out for a two-hour session, 70% is plenty. 138 minutes of full battery is the advertised ceiling — you don't need all of it for a quick scout.
  3. Take it off the dock once it's full. The charger has overcharge protection, so you won't damage anything by leaving it on overnight. But you will age the battery faster if it lives on the dock permanently.
  4. Charge at room temperature. Not on a sunny kitchen counter. Not in a cold garage in December. Around 18-25°C is ideal.
  5. Don't charge while the housing is still wet. Dry it off, especially the contact surface that touches the dock. Moisture plus current plus metal contacts is a bad combination.

What about "topping up" between trips?

Topping up a battery a few percent is fine. What you want to avoid is the full 0-to-100 cycle multiple times a week. If you fish Saturday and the battery is at 60%, leave it. Use it again Sunday. Charge afterward, to 80%, and leave it.

Pro tip: If you fish twice a week or more, your battery doesn't need to be at 100% between trips. Charge to 80% after each outing. It's one of the single biggest things you can do to extend battery life.

Between Trips: Where Most People Get It Wrong

This is the invisible part. The camera sits in a bag or a drawer for 4-10 days between outings. What it's doing in that time matters.

Two habits cause most of the damage.

Habit 1: Leaving it on the charger permanently

The dock becomes a convenient storage spot. The camera lives there, plugged in, green LED glowing, ready to go at any moment. This is comfortable. It's also the worst thing you can do for the battery.

Two weeks at 100% charge, held by the dock's trickle topping, causes more damage than five full discharge cycles. Take it off the dock once it's full.

Habit 2: Draining it to 0% and forgetting

The opposite mistake. You used it for a long session, it died, you tossed it in the gear bag, and three weeks later you remember it's there. A dead battery that sits dead can enter protection mode. Sometimes the dock brings it back. Sometimes it doesn't.

Even if it revives, the internal capacity has taken a hit.

The in-between routine

When you get home from a trip:

  1. Rinse the housing if it was in salt water (separate post on that).
  2. Dry the camera thoroughly, including the dock contact surface.
  3. Charge to around 80%. You can tell when it's close — the indicator is usually reliable.
  4. Unplug and store somewhere cool and dry, ideally indoors.
  5. Don't touch it again until the next trip.

That's it. Five minutes of care after each outing buys you two extra seasons.

Long-Term Storage: Off-Season Rules

If you're a fair-weather angler, your camera sits idle from November to March. That off-season storage is where batteries either survive or get quietly murdered.

The rules for putting a camera away for 3+ months:

  • Charge to 50-60%, not 100%. A half-full battery ages the slowest when idle.
  • Store indoors. Not in a garage, shed, or boat. Temperature swings are worse than steady cold.
  • Store cool. A cupboard, a drawer, a shelf away from heat sources. Ideal is 10-15°C, but anything indoors is fine.
  • Leave the housing closed and dry. Any moisture trapped inside over winter is bad news for electronics.
  • Every 2-3 months, wake it up. Power on, check battery level. If it's dropped below 30%, top it back up to 60%. Lithium batteries self-discharge slowly, and this check prevents the deep-drain problem.

This last point — the periodic check — is where most off-season storage fails. People put the camera away and forget about it. Six months later they find a battery that's self-discharged to zero and been stuck there for months.

Cold-Weather Use: Short-Term Performance Loss

If you ice fish or run sessions in December, you've noticed the battery seems to die faster. That's real and it's normal.

Cold temperatures slow the chemical reactions inside a lithium cell. The battery isn't losing capacity — it just can't deliver it as fast. A camera that runs 138 minutes in summer might run 70-80 minutes at -5°C. Warm it back up and the full capacity returns.

Two practical rules for cold-weather use:

  1. Keep the camera warm until you drop it. Inside a jacket pocket, inside a shelter, inside a lined pouch. Let it hit the cold water already fully "working."
  2. Don't charge it until it's warmed back up. Charging a battery below 0°C can cause permanent capacity loss through what's called lithium plating. Bring it inside, let it warm up for an hour, then charge.
Common mistake: pulling the camera out of a frozen tackle bag, putting it on the dock because you need it charged for tomorrow, and plugging in. Warm it up first. Even 30 minutes at room temperature makes a real difference.

Signs Your Battery Is Aging Faster Than It Should

After a season or two, you'll start to notice subtle changes. Some are normal. Some mean you've been storing the camera wrong.

Normal after 12-18 months

  • 5-10% shorter battery life (130 minutes instead of 138).
  • Slightly faster drop from 100% to 80%, then more gradual.
  • Minor variance in how long charging takes from trip to trip.

Not normal — means it's been mistreated

  • Battery life drops by 30%+ within the first year.
  • Camera won't hold a charge overnight.
  • Indicator shows full after 20-30 minutes of charging.
  • Camera shuts off unexpectedly mid-session with plenty of charge remaining.
  • Charging gets noticeably hotter than it used to.

If you see the "not normal" symptoms, think back to how you've been storing it. Has it lived on the dock? Sat in a hot garage? Been left dead for weeks? You can't undo that damage, but you can stop making it worse from here.

What to Do if You've Already Been Careless

Say you've had the camera a year, it's lived on the dock, you've noticed it dies faster than it used to. Can you recover any battery life?

Honestly, no. Battery wear is one-way. But you can stop the decline from accelerating.

  1. Take it off the dock. Store it at 60% between trips from now on.
  2. Do the periodic off-season check — don't let it sit dead.
  3. Keep it out of extreme temperatures.
  4. If the damage is severe, accept you'll get 1-2 more seasons out of it instead of 3-4.

The good news: even a worn lithium battery can still do useful work. 80 minutes of recording is plenty for most trips.
