You're researching fishing tech, you've narrowed it down to three well-known names, and the internet is full of paid-placement "best of" lists that rank them in suspicious order. This isn't one of those. We distribute the CanFish CamX across Europe, so we're biased, and we'll be upfront about that. But any buying guide that pretends the competition is garbage is a bad buying guide, and a dishonest one. ReelSonar and Aqua-Vu have genuine strengths that the CamX doesn't match. So let's get into the specifics.

First, a clarification: these aren't the same product

A lot of comparison articles treat the CanFish CamX, the ReelSonar iBobber, and Aqua-Vu cameras as direct competitors. They're not, really. Here's what they actually do:

  • CanFish CamX — a wireless underwater video camera. Drops into the water on a line, records 1080p video internally, streams to your phone above water via WiFi.
  • ReelSonar iBobber — a castable Bluetooth sonar (a "smart bobber"). It doesn't take video. It sends fish-finder data (depth, fish arches, water temperature) to your phone using sonar.
  • Aqua-Vu MO-Series — a cable-tethered underwater camera with a built-in LCD monitor. No phone needed, no WiFi.
  • (Honourable mention: Marcum Recon 5+ sits in roughly the same space as Aqua-Vu — cable, monitor, serious fishing-focused build. If you like one you'll probably like the other.)

That's why the shopping question isn't "which is best" — it's "which matches how you fish." Let's break them down.

The CanFish CamX: best when you want footage

The CamX is built around a fairly simple proposition: you want to see the water column in real visible-light video, ideally at a price that doesn't make you flinch.

Strengths

  • Sony STARVIS 2MP FHD CMOS sensor with F/2.0 aperture — a genuinely good sensor at this price point, and noticeably better than generic CMOS in low-light conditions.
  • 136° field of view. Wide enough to capture lure action and fish approach angles without fish-eye distortion being cartoonish.
  • 200m depth rating. Overkill for most freshwater use; genuinely useful for sea work or deep-lake applications.
  • Wireless. No cable snagging, no tangling with your line, no hauling a tethered unit around the boat.
  • Shareable footage. You can clip highlights and post them, review them on a big screen, study how pike actually attack lures in your local water.
  • Priced in the €129-€189 window — dramatically less than premium cable cameras.

Weaknesses

  • 138-minute battery. Short compared to premium gear. You'll plan around this on long sessions.
  • No live viewing while the camera is below the surface. WiFi does not transmit through water for any wireless camera — you're either streaming the bit above water or recording internally and reviewing after. This is physics, not a camera-specific limitation, but it's worth saying clearly.
  • You view the footage on your phone. No dedicated monitor. On a bright summer day, phone visibility is a real issue.
  • Not built for live fish-finding decisions. It's a "see what's going on" camera, not a "is there fish here right now" tool.

The ReelSonar iBobber: best when you want sonar data

The iBobber is a castable Bluetooth sonar that looks roughly like a round bobber. You cast it, it floats, it pings sonar down into the water and tells your phone what's below it.

Strengths

  • Cheap entry into fish-finding tech. Typically priced under €100.
  • No boat required. You can fish-find from shore, kayak, or a float tube just as easily as from a bass boat.
  • Shows you depth, water temperature, fish arches and bottom contour without needing boat-mounted equipment.
  • Long battery life compared to video cameras — typically 8-10 hours from a charge.
  • Small, light, and won't tangle in your line the way a wired camera might.

Weaknesses

  • It's sonar, not video. You're getting interpreted fish-arch data, not a picture. If you want to see a fish refuse a lure, this doesn't help.
  • Sonar resolution on a small castable is limited. You'll see "there's something here" more reliably than "that's a 3kg pike."
  • Bluetooth range is ~30m. Fine for shore fishing, tight for trolling.
  • The app experience has been a mixed bag over the years — some firmware updates have fixed it, others have broken it. Check recent reviews.

The Aqua-Vu MO-Series: best when you want a monitor, not a phone

Aqua-Vu is one of the oldest names in fishing cameras, and the MO-Series is their portable cable-tethered line. You plug a camera into a handheld monitor and lower the camera on its cable. Everything's right there on the screen.

Strengths

  • Serious build. Aqua-Vu has been making fishing-specific cameras for over two decades. These are designed for repeated abuse, cold weather, and long seasons.
  • Dedicated sunlight-readable LCD monitor. No phone squinting.
  • Live viewing while the camera is underwater — because it's cabled, you're not fighting water-blocking WiFi.
  • No app dependency. No firmware drama. No "will this work with my new iPhone" anxiety.
  • Well-supported in North American ice-fishing culture; strong used market (though mostly US-side).

Weaknesses

  • Expensive. €400-€800+ depending on model and monitor size.
  • Cable-tethered. Cables tangle, pinch, get fouled on structure. Hauling them around a boat is its own activity.
  • Heavy. The monitor plus cable plus housing is a considerably bulkier kit than a wireless camera and phone.
  • Harder to buy in Europe. Distribution is US-centric, so warranty and returns can be awkward for European buyers.
  • Typically lower-resolution than modern wireless cameras. Many MO-Series monitors are not 1080p.

Buy the ReelSonar iBobber if:

  • You want "are there fish here?" information, not footage.

  • You don't care about seeing lure action — you want to find depth and temperature breaks.

Buy the Aqua-Vu MO-Series if:

  • Ice fishing is a big part of your year and you want to watch fish react to a jig.
  • You're fine with €500+ budget and want an all-in-one unit with a real monitor.
  • You don't trust phones for fishing and want a dedicated, rugged display.
  • You're comfortable sourcing from the US and handling warranty through a US reseller.

Buy the CanFish CamX if:

  • You want to see what's happening underwater — lure action, fish approach, bottom structure — at a reasonable price.
  • You fish open water, trolling, or various European methods where a cable is a nuisance.
  • You're happy reviewing footage on your phone rather than paying triple for a dedicated monitor.
  • You want an EU warranty and fast shipping within Europe.
  • Your session length is manageable within the 2-2.5 hour battery window, or you're happy to bring a spare power source.

What none of these three will do

None of these are live-viewing underwater cameras while submerged — including the CamX. If you want live video of what's below you right now, in real time, while the camera is underwater, you need a cabled camera (Aqua-Vu, Marcum, or similar). Water blocks WiFi, so no wireless camera can do this at any price.

None of these will replace your own fishing judgement. A sonar tells you where something is; a camera tells you what it looks like; neither tells you how to make it bite.

And none will last forever. Plan for a 3-5 year lifecycle at honest usage rates, not a decade. The batteries alone will see to that.

The honest bottom line

There's no "best" in this three-way comparison because they do different jobs. The iBobber is the cheapest and the most specialised (it tells you if fish are around). The Aqua-Vu is the premium choice for dedicated, mostly-ice-fishing use, if you can source one in Europe without pain. The CamX is the broadest-utility pick — it gives you actual video, at a price that won't hurt if you drop it once — and it's built for European shipping and warranty from day one.

Pick the one that matches your fishing, not the one with the flashiest marketing. All three can be the right buy for the right angler. None of them are the right buy for everyone.
